GILLIGAN'S beat Maybank in straight sets, 25-23, 27-25, 26-24, in the men's division of the Philippine Superliga Grand Prix at Ynares Sports Arena on Wednesday.
JP Torres led the the Sisig Kings as the former University of Santo Tomas star came with 12 points, from 10 spikes and two blocks while John Depante, Edjet Mabbayad, Ronald Tonquin and Jack Locquiao combined 28 points in an impressive debut for Giligan's.
"Kuntento naman ako sa nilaro ng team ngayon," said Giligan's coach Frank Mauricio. "It was a total team effort. Everybody nag-contribute sa game namin."
Mauricio, however, stressed that the team needs to improve and go back to the basics if it hopes to succeed in the country's first major commercial volleyball league for men.
"Kailangan pa namin i-polish 'yung basic skills namin gaya ng service, 'yung block namin kailangan patibayin at 'yung floor defense namin," he said.
Back-to-back errors by Maybank allowed the Sisig Kings to peel off from a 19-all deadlock and reach match point, but the Tigers fought back to prolong the game, 24-all.
However, a Depante kill and a service ace by Tonquin wrapped up the match for Gilligan's.
Ivan Bacolod finished with 10 points for Maybank.
