FRANCIS Vicente has been appointed national women's volleyball team coach while Sammy Acaylar has been named head coach of the Philippine men's team.
Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas Inc. president Joey Romasanta made the announcement during Thursday's Philippine Olympic Committee radio program on DZSR Sports Radio 918.
Vicente and Acaylar were selected from a pool of coaches in the LVPI coaches’ commission, which were agreed upon by the federation’s board.
Vicente is currently the head coach of University of the East women’s team while having mentored the age-group national squads in the past. Acaylar, on the other hand, recently stepped down as head coach of Cignal in the Philippine Super Liga but still handles the Perpetual Help women’s squad in the NCAA.
Despite Vicente and Acaylar’s current collegiate coaching stints, Romasanta noted that both men met the board’s top criteria for choosing the national team coaches, which is commitment.
“Our main criteria is commitment and what they plan to do,” said Romasanta. “Both coaches will be requested to name their coaching staff. Before you form a team, you have to form a coach’s team.”
Romasanta said both coaches will be opening tryouts very soon where commitment to the national team remains of utmost importance.
“Alam na nila (coaches) kung sino ang makakatulong. Kung puwedeng sumali sila sa tryout and at the same time, commit themselves to the team,” said Romasanta.
The women’s volleyball team is scheduled to compete in the Asian Under-23 Championship, Asian Senior Championship, and the Southeast Asian Games this year.
The men’s team will also have a busy schedule as they are slated to see action in the Asian Under-23 Championship and the SEA Games.
