UNIVERSITY of the East coach Francis Vicente is pleased to see his wards competing hard despite five winless outings in the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament.
But for the Lady Warriors to make their breakthrough win, the national team mentor hopes for a true leader to step up and take charge.
He has one person in mind in UE skipper Shaya Adorador.
Vicente said he’s generally happy with how his team has been improving, but called for a change in attitude, especially for a little more assertiveness from Adorador, to push the Lady Warriors forward.
"Kailangan yung leaders magstep-up. 'Yun ba 'yung makita mong may galit ng kaunti. Yung tipong firmness, nahihirapan pa. So kailangan yung leadership andun," said Vicente after their 25-14, 25-21, 25-21 defeat to Ateneo on Wednesday.
"Maraming factor kung bakit ganyan. Nag-improve 'yung team in terms of competitiveness. Yun naman yung lagi namin sinasabi, yung competitive level ng team aangat na," he added.
Vicente noted that Adorador has been performing consistently well for UE, but he pointed out that his ace spiker needs to be more aggressive and show a fighting edge to demand better performance from her teammates as well.
"I was expecting Shaya. Pero soft-hearted kasi si Shaya e. Given na yun. Ang inaalis ko lang sa kanya, hiwalay mo yung andun ka sa bahay at andun ka sa trabaho mo," Vicente said.
"Pag sinabi mong trabaho, strikto ka dyan e. Ikaw ang boss dyan, di ka pwedeng babait bait. Kung babait bait ka, aabusuhin ka ng kapwa mo. Masaktan na ang masasaktan," he added.
The outspoken coach is confident Adorador will get to that level with a little more push.
"I always say that, I'm a leader also. Pag ako nagsalita gusto ko firm. Walang pabago-bago. Decisive," he said.
