    Foton drawn to play Hong Kong, Vietnam in group stage of Asian Women’s Club Championship

    FOTON has been grouped with Hong Kong and Vietnam for the first phase of the the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Asian Women’s Club Championship set Sept. 3 to 11.

    Southeast Asian powerhouse Thailand was drawn to play against North Korea and Iran Group B, while Japan, Kazakhstan and Indonesia are in Group C.

    Group D will have China, Chinese Taipei, Malaysia and Turkmekistan.

    The core of the team that won the Super Liga Grand Prix will be reinforced by players from other Super Liga teams.

    Foton team manager Alvin Lu said Aby Marano of F2 Logistics, Jen Reyes and Aiza Pontillas of Petron, Rachel Anne Daquis, Jovelyn Gonzaga, Tina Salak and Honey Royse Tubino of RC Cola-Army will be invited to join the team that will be powered by American imports Ariel Usher and Lindsay Stalzer.

    “We like where we landed,” said Foton team manager Alvin Lu after the draw on Wednesday at the Foton showroom in Quezon City.

    “With this, we can now start our preparation for the tough grind ahead. We will complete our lineup next week and schedule our international training, probably in Thailand, very soon,” he added.

    “We want to have an early preparation and we’re looking to assemble a very strong and fighting team. Hopefully, we can land in the top four.”

    The Toplander will open its bid against Hong Kong before facing Vietnam. The top two teams from each group advance to the quarterfinals.

    “The LVPI is very glad to entrust the hosting and organization of this prestigious event to the PSL,” said Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc. president Joey Romasanta.

    “We’re looking forward to a very successful participation and organisation to finally put the Philippines back in the international volleyball map.”

    AVC technical delegate Jaksuwan Tocharoen of Thailand attended the draw.
