    Volleyball popularity, Gonzaga's emotional reaction key factors in FIVB world club tilt staging in PH

    THE rising popularity of volleyball in the Philippines was one of the big reasons why FIVB chose the country to host the Women’s Club World Championship, according to one of its top officials.

    Stav Jacobi, a member of the executive committee of the FIVB, said volleyball’s strong presence in the Philippines played a role in their decision to hold the event, which is set from October 18 to 23, at the Mall of Asia Arena.

    “We chose a country where a strong volleyball tradition is present,” Jacobi said during the official launch of the event on Tuesday at the Diamond Hotel.

    Jacobi also noted the emotional reaction of Jovelyn Gonzaga after being named a member of the Philippine team only affirmed that FIVB made the right choice. Gonzaga was left in tears after she was chosen to be part of the Philippine squad a few weeks ago.

    “These emotions, that is the answer to the first question why the World Championship should come to the Philippines,” he said.

    Philip Ella Juico, the head of the organizing committee and Philippine Super Liga chairman, said Filipino volleyball fans should be excited for the coming club championship that drew teams from Brazil and Europe, among others.

    “This is the first world championship to be held in Southeast Asia,” Juico said.
