PSL F2 Logistics Manila had some shining moments in its home debut on the world stage but came up short as Rexona Sesc proved too strong to come away with a 25-15, 25-13, 25-20 win in the FIVB World Club Women’s Championships on Tuesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The Brazilian club imposed their might early, winning the first two sets in 29 minutes. But the host team started the third set on fire, building its biggest lead at 14-7, before Rexona Sesc went on an 8-1 run to knot it up at 15.
Rexona Sesc didn’t let up the rest of the way, sealing the win with a 10-5 run.
PSL-F2 Logistics Manila skipper Rachel Anne Daquis accepted the loss but insisted that their efforts did not go to waste as they had everything to gain in their defeat.
“Syempre unang-una, ibang level na ito eh so sila, ang kalaban namin, kumbaga exposed sila sa international competition unlike us na pasulpot-sulpot lang ang sali namin. But then natutuwa kami doon sa experience namin,” she said.
“Kasi dumidikit kami tapos third set lumamang pa kami so sobrang happy pa rin kami na doon nakikita na kaya pala,” she added. “Pero nagso-short kasi kulang pa talaga sa experience and doon sa exposure na kalaban ang international teams.”
PSL Manila managed to tie Rexona Sesc in attack points, with 35 apiece. But the Brazilian squad capitalized on an error-prone host team, which had 16 errors compared to Rexona Sesc’s seven turnovers.
Anne Bujis and Carol da Silva each had 13 points for Rexona Sesc, while Gabi Guimaraes added 11.
Stephanie Niemer led the way for PSL-F2 Logistics Manila with 13 points and fellow imports Zenya Nyukhalova and Lindsay Stalzer had eight and six markers, respectively.
The local players Kim Fajardo, Mika Reyes, Jaja Santiago, Jovelyn Gonzaga, and Daquis also had their moments in the match that wowed the home crowd.
