AS she celebrated her first UAAP title, Ateneo star Alyssa Valdez also took the time to console former high school teammate Kim Fajardo of La Salle at the end of an emotional UAAP women's volleyball finals.
Valdez and Fajardo shared a poignant moment on Saturday when the two former University of Santo Tomas high school teammates hugged it out following the Lady Eagles’ straight-set victory over the Lady Archers.
They Said It!
“For me, ginawa niya ang lahat this game. Nakaka-disappoint din na natalo sila." Ateneo volleyball star Alyssa Valdez on former high school teammate and now DLSU rival Kim Fajardo
“Si Kim, naiiyak talaga," Valdez, the Finals and season MVP, said as she looked back at the emotional scene. "For me, ginawa niya ang lahat this game. Nakaka-disappoint din na natalo sila.”
Valdez and Fajardo used to be teammates in a UST high school team that dominated the league until they parted ways - Valdez becoming a star with the Lady Eagles and Fajardo carving her own niche in a star-studded La Salle team.
Fajardo had the better of the two's previous match-ups in the finals but Valdez turned the tables on Saturday, helping the Lady Eagles end La Salle's three-year title run with an upset for the ages.
Worse, Fajardo's double violation on matchpoint in Game Three on Wednesday led to the Lady Eagles victory that wiped out La Salle's thrice-to-beat edge and set the stage for Saturday's winner-take-all showdown.
But at the end of a thrilling finals, it was Valdez who went out of her way to console Fajardo.
“Kaya sabi ko sa kanya, ginawa niya ang best niya. Both teams namam ginawa ang best nila. May nananalo, may natatalo,” said Valdez, known as 'Baldo' among her army of supporters.
Valdez said it was unfortunate that somebody had to lose in an epic title series.
“Siguro God gave us this win talaga,” she said.
