FEU Tamaraws spikers find right combination just in time to dispose of Warriors

    Jul 27, 2015

FAR Eastern University recovered from a set down to turn back University of the East, 19-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-18, to keep its quarterfinals bid alive in the Spikers' Turf Collegiate Conference at The Arena in San Juan on Monday.

Geric Gacutan made 13 for FEU, while skipper Greg Dolor added 11

The Tamaraws snapped a two-game slide for a 1-2 record and fourth spot in Group A, behind unbeaten Emilio Aguinaldo College (3-0), and the pair of National University and NCBA, which carry identical cards of 2-0.

Winning coach Joseph Santos fielded all 14 players as he tries to find the right mix for his team after losing to EAC, 25-22, 19-25, 18-25, 25-27.

“Nag-mix ako ng bata at matanda (na players) so medyo nag-jell naman,” he said. “Kasi noong last game namin puro mga bata ang ipinasok ko. Ngayon medyo nagdyi-jell na ang mga bata at matanda kaya ok naman.”

“Pero kapag nakapasok na kami sa (quarterfinals) imi-mix na namin sila na bata at matanda. Sa ngayon pinagdyi-jell muna namin sila,” he added.

The Tamaraws lost in the numbers game as they were outworked in attacks (44-51), blocks (4-6) and, service aces (3-4). They were also outplayed defensively as the team had lesser digs (21-25), sets, (29-30) and reception (23-25).

But FEU made up for it by earning 43 extra points off  UE's errors, while only having 21 miscues of its own.

Edward Camposano made 19 points for UE, while Samuel Lelic added 13.

The Red Warriors absorbed their third straight loss in as many matches.
