THE Far Eastern University pair of Samantha Dawson and Bernadette Pons tried something new in winning the third leg of the 2012 Petron Ladies' Beach Volleyball tournament at the sand courts of the University of the East-Caloocan campus.
The duo gambled with their drop shots as they repulsed La Salle Dasmarinas' Iari Yongco and substitute Mariel Desengano, 21-17, 21-16, in their best-of-three finals encounter of this spikefest supported by Petron and Mikasa Balls.
Pons, a rookie recruit from Talisay City in Negros Occidental, took center stage in the second set as they widened a 14-10 lead. She claimed four crucial points on her drop shots and an ace to give the Lady Tamaraws match point, 20-16.
“Ngayon ko lang ginamit ulit ang mga drop shots ko. Good experience sa amin itong pagsali namin dito,” said the 17-year-old Pons.
They reached the finals following a 21-17, 21-18 beating of UE spikers Jessica Paron and Krycel Cueva in the semifinals.
Yongco and Desengano, on the other hand, arranged their finals clash with Dawson and Pons following a 24-26, 21-16, 15-13 triumph over San Beda spikers Janine Marciano and Frances Molina.
Dawson and Pons reached the semis after finishing with a 3-1 win-loss record.
The FEU bets started their campaign with a 21-16 win over Trinity’s Carissa Martinez and Mary Paz Soteco. A 21-14 triumph over UE’s Leuseth Dawis and Chelo Ramos and a 21-16 stopping of Iumi Yongco and Marra Galicia followed.
Winners and runners-up of the Petron volley circuit’s three legs will see action in the Battle of the Champions on the island paradise of Boracay later this year to determine the series’ beach volley grand champions.
