FAR Eastern University recovered from a sluggish start to turn back University of Santo Tomas, 15-25, 25-15, 25-22, 25-22, in the 76th UAAP women's volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan on Saturday.
Mary Palma came up with 20 points, while rookie Bernadette Pons and Geneveve Casugod added 13 and 10 markers, respectively, as FEU snapped a three-match losing run, evened its win-loss record to 3-3 and moved to fifth spot.
The Tigresses looked set to end its run of futility with a fine first set but could not sustain it and wound up absorbing their fourth consecutive defeat for a 2-5 card.
"May target kasi kami if ever may chance mananalo pa kami sa Adamson, pwede mag fourth place at hindi kami papasok ng second round nang mababa ang morale," said FEU coach Shaq delos Santos.
The Morayta-based squad suddenly went cold and trailed 1-8 at the start of the fourth set and let UST start to pull away, 12-5.
The Tigresses threatened to take the set as it posted a 20-15 advantage but the Lady Tams scored five straight points to tie the game, 20-20, and went on to nail the win.
FEU defended the net well as it scored 12 block points, including seven from Casugod, while UST only had five.
Pam Lastimosa made 18 markers for the Tigresses, while Mela Tunay added 13.
