FAR Eastern University coach Shaq de los Santos will lean on momentum as they try to go for the kill against La Salle in the semifinals of the UAAP Season 78 women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday at the MOA Arena.
Despite coming into the Final Four with a twice-to-beat disadvantage, the veteran mentor believes that his team has the confidence and the drive to defeat the Lady Spikers.
“Para sa akin, nasa amin ‘yung momentum kasi tapos na naman ang first round and second round dito (sa semis). Kapag nagrelax ka, sorry ka talaga, walang mangyayari sa inyo,” he said after FEU pulled off a 15-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-21, 16-14 win.
De los Santos was pleased to see his wards step up and learn from their past games, particularly those five five-set matches in the elimination round.
“Sobrang laki kasi, unang-una, nagfa-five sets kami sa elimination round so napakalaking bagay noon. Malaking tulong talaga kasi kung hindi kami used sa ganoon, I’m sure na-straight kami ng kalaban,” he said.
The third year FEU coach, however, revealed their training regimen as they try to get their 30th title in the league. In preparation for the semifinals, the Lady Tamaraws’ tune-up games were against male volleyball players.
“Actually ano sila mga bading, hindi na kami nagtu-tune up sa mga babae, honestly speaking,” said De los Santos. “Kahit sila (La Salle), lahat ng mga teams ngayon, ang lahat ng kalaban nila mga lalake. Kasi kung gusto mong bumilis para makasabay, doon mo ipa-tune up. Ang laking bagay talaga.”
