FAR Eastern University defeated undermanned Ateneo, 17-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-14, to take the solo lead in Group A in the Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference on Saturday at The Arena in San Juan.

Skipper Bernadeth Pons, who came from the UAAP opening at MOA Arena, led the way with 16 points as FEU improved to 2-0.

Toni Rose Basas had 15 markers and Jeanette Villarreal added 13 for the Lady Tamaraws.

“Sinasabi ko nga sa kanila na daanin sa bilis at huwag sasabay sa tempo ng kalaban,” said FEU coach George Pascua, who had to reshuffle his roster in the first, second and third sets.

“Noong una gusto nilang madaliin kaagad, nagmamadali sila kaya wala sa timing. ’Yung sobrang aggressiveness nila nawawala na sa tamang ginagawa nila. Kaya noong huli nagkaroon ako ng adjustments. Nagpalit ako ng tao,” he added.

FEU capitalized on the absence of Ateneo skipper Bea de Leon, who has to skip the game due to schoolwork, Maddie Madayag who has an ankle injury, and Ana Gopico, out with a hamstring injury.
