FAR Eastern University came back from a set down to frustrate University of the Philippines, 21-25, 25-16, 25-20, 25-22, and inch closer to clinching its spot in the Final Four of the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball tournament on Saturday at The Arena in San Juan.
Skipper Bernadeth Pons led the way for FEU in both offense and defense with 15 points, 20 digs and 18 excellent receptions.
Jeanette Villareal each had 15 points, while Celine Domingo added 11 and Toni Rose Basas made 10 markers for the Lady Tamaraws, who moved a win away from securing at least a playoff as it improved to a 7-4 win-loss record.
“Marami pa kaming tatrabahuhin,” said FEU coach George Pascua, who rued his team’s slow start. “Kailangan ang mind setting ng mga players ko kailangan maging consistent sa game plan.”
“Sabi ko sa mga players ko, parang sasakyan ‘yan eh, hindi pwedeng quinta kaagad, kailangan primera, segunda muna and then kapag nakuha na ang composure nila then ‘yun dire-diretso na sila,” he added.
With the long break ahead, Pascua is hoping that they can make use of the time to work on their weaknesses.
The Lady Tamaraws will face Adamson University on April 7.
“‘Yun nga lang talagang slow start kami so kapag nakuha pa namin ‘yun mas madali na sa amin manalo,” said the veteran mentor.
Team captain Tots Carlos finished with 23 points for UP, while Isa Molde added 18 markers and 17 digs.
UP slid to 3-8 and fell on the brink of elimination.
