FAR Eastern University stunned erstwhile unbeaten National University, 25-22, 25-25, 25-13, 25-20, on Wednesday in the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
Bernadeth Pons scored 18 points as FEU improved to 4-2 for a three-way tie with La Salle and Ateneo.
Toni Rose Basas added 16 points and Celine Domingo scored 12 for the Lady Tamaraws.
NU remained on top with a 5-1 win-loss record.
“Malaking bagay ’to kasi wala pang talo ang NU, first time nila matalo tapos sa amin,” said FEU coach George Pascua, pleased that Lady Tamaraws got a big boost in morale ahead of crucial matches.
“Hopefully masustain namin ‘yung energy saka ‘yung consistency noong ginawa namin saka ‘yung effort,” he added.
The veteran mentor noted how pleased he was with the execution of his game plan especially on their service and defense on NU top hitter Santiago.
“Pinractice namin ‘yung service-receive, nag materialize naman. Saka ‘yung block namin kay Jaja, 80 percent nasunod ‘yung game plan,” said Pascua.
FEU had 15 service aces, while NU only had four and the Lady Tamaraws limited Jaja Santiago to just 13 points after averaging 22.2 points per game.
Risa Sato and Roselyn Doria combined for 25 markers for NU.
