FAR Eastern University cruised to its fourth straight win, defeating struggling University of Santo Tomas, 25-16, 25-22, 25-25-20, in the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball tournament on Saturday at the MOA Arena.
Toni Rose Basas and Celine Domingo scored eight points apiece for FEU, while skipper Bernadeth Pons and Kyle Negrito added seven markers each.
From a 1-2 record at the start of the season, FEU finished off the first round of elimination on a high note.
“Marami pa kaming paghahandaan kasi nagkaalaman na sa first round so sa second round mag-iiba ang competition, mas tataas ang level,” said Lady Tamaraws coach George Pascua.
“Hindi pa naman kami nagpi-peak mahirap biglang raratsada kaya sabi ko nga sa mga players ko ’wag sila mananawang manalo,” he added.
FEU erased a 7-9 deficit in the opening set, going on an 8-0 run to take control. In the second set, the Lady Tamaraws again had a slow start before taking charge.
“‘Yung maturity nila sa court, ‘yung chemistry nila is nandoon, ‘yung pinractice namin na score na-ano namin na-apply sa game,” said Pascua.
“Before kasi sa first three games namin medyo hindi pa ganoon ka smooth, hindi pa ganoon katibay ang kapit nila pero after ng talo namin is nagsunud-sunod na,” he added.
No one from the FEU side scored in double figures but the Lady Tamaraws got 29 points from UST errors. The Lady Tamaraws had 17 miscues.
Carla Sandoval had 12 points, while skipper Sisi Rondina had 11 markers and 11 digs for UST, which absorbed its third straight loss and slid to 2-5 at seventh spot.
