DE La Salle clinched a semifinals berth in the 75th UAAP women’s volleyball tournament Sunday as it snapped the four-game winning streak of Far Eastern University, 25-17, 25-16, 25-23 at The Arena in San Juan.
Ara Galang ended all of the Lady Tams’ hopes of extending the game to a fourth set after she fired four points in a closing 7-2 run by the Lady Spikers to clinch the game and the win – the 10th straight for the Taft-based school this season.
“Ang ganda ng receive nila, ang ganda ng serve, halos lahat maganda,” said La Salle coach Ramil de Jesus, amazed at how the Lady Tams played his team.
“Siguro kung sino na lang ang may experience (yun ang nanalo),” said de Jesus, a former player of FEU men’s volleyball team.
Jeushl Wensh Tiu led the Lady Spikers with 17 points on 15 spikes and two blocks, while Abigail Maraño chipped in 12 on eight attacks, two blocks, and two service aces.
Galang had 11 on nine hits and two service aces.
La Salle now holds a 10-1 (win-loss) card as it advanced to the Final Four.
Marjorie Roxas produced eight markers, on top of six attacks and two blocks, while Rosemarie Vargas had eight from five spikes, one block, and two service aces, for FEU, which lost for the first time after winning its last four outings.
The Lady Tams dropped to a 6-5 card, tied with University of Santo Tomas and National University at fourth spot.
In the day’s other match, National University dominated University of the East in straight sets, 25-11, 25-16, 25-21.
Dindin Santiago came through with an all-around performance of 22 points on top of 16 spikes, four blocks, and two service aces, while Myla Pablo contributed 11 on eight hits, two blocks, and one service ace.
Ma. Leuseht Dawis single-handedly carried the Lady Warriors with 11 markers, from nine attacks, one block, and one service errors.
Her effort proved in vain as UE remained winless and absorbed its 11th loss of the season.
