THE much-anticipated formation of an Ateneo selection for the Shakey's V-League has been dashed as the university’s athletic director said there are no plans to field the current Lady Eagles in the Open Conference.
Athletic director Em Fernandez said on Monday Ateneo will not be fielding a team in the Open Conference but is looking to see action in the Collegiate Conference of the pioneering commercial volleyball league later this year.
That quashes plans earlier announced by Ateneo team manager Tony Boy Liao of putting together an Ateneo selection that will mix Alyssa Valdez and other former Lady Eagles like Charo Soriano and Denden Lazaro with current players like Bea de Leon and Jia Morado, among others.
"No plans of joining the V-League this coming conference," said Fernandez in a text message.
"No other plans, for this summer, (but) 2nd conference of the V-League is the other tournament we are planning to join," he said.
The planned Valdez reunion with Lazaro, Soriano, Bea Tan, Ella de Jesus, and Bea Pascual may still happen, although current Lady Eagles may now be out of the equation.
Liao could not be reached for comment at posting time.
Valdez confirmed after her final UAAP game that she is seeing action in the V-League, although she has yet to commit to a club for the tournament opening on May 22.
"Wala pa, wala pa akong team," she told SPIN.ph on Monday.
The three-time UAAP MVP, previously played for PLDT in the V-League, said she is also not closing the door on playing in the Philippine Super Liga in the future.
"I'm really open to a lot of opportunities right now pero I'm committed now sa V-League," she said. "Pero I'm really open, I'm really open, wala naman akong sinasaradong pinto kung saan naman tayo mapupunta."
