A TEAM of seven players from Emilio Aguinaldo College pulled off what eight other squads have failed to do in more than a season, downing Perpetual Help on Tuesday to end the Lady Altas’ winning streak at 19 matches.
The Lady Generals stunned the reigning champions 30-28, 19-25, 25-15, 27-25 in the 88th NCAA season women’s volleyball tournament at the Arena in San Juan, shocking the Lady Altas who had been unbeaten since last season.
A Jamela Suyat attack put Perpetual ahead 25-24 in the fourth set, but the Lady Generals came up with three consecutive points capped by an Arnie Yumul service ace to win the match.
Yumul led the lady Generals with 11 points, Arianna May Angustia, Charmille Belleza and Ivy Angeline Carlos added 10 apiece, while Anelyn Arroyo and Marie Charlette Lorenzo both chipped in six. Libero Jennifer Caballero was the seventh player for the team, which registered 13 service aces against the two of Perpetual Help.
Only seven players were fielded by EAC coach Leo Rivera and among those who did not see action was skipper Clara Camille Lozada, but the Lady Generals managed to come up with the win using a superb service game and fine defense.
“Number one na opensa namin ang service,” said EAC coach Leo Rivera. “Kaya bawat practice namin umuubos ako ng tatlo o apat na minuto sa service lang.”
Emilio Aguinaldo now holds a 4-1 win-loss card, tied with San Sebastian and San Beda in second spot.
April Anne Sartin came away with 15 points, on top of 14 attacks and one service ace, while reigning MVP Sandra delos Santos contributed 12 for Perpetual Help, which now has a 5-1 win-loss record.
Meanwhile, Lyceum University booked its first win in six matches after trouncing Jose Rizal University, 25-19, 25-14, 25-17.
Analee Paredes came up with 11 points for Lyceum.
Joana Clemente finished with 12 markers for JRU, which is winless in five outings.
