BINAN, Laguna — Philippine defense specialist Dawn Macandili, the smallest player in the tournament, stood 10 feet tall when she was named second best libero in the 19th AVC Asian Senior Women’s Championship on Thursday at Alonte Sports Arena here.

The national team reserve libero proved that there’s no small role as long as you put your heart and mind into it.

“Nakaka-amaze kasi 'yung parang training ka lang nang training, tapos gusto ko lang naman makatulong ka sa team, para hindi bumagsak ang bola,” said the five-foot Macandili.

“Tapos may nakaka-recognize pala ng ganoon, parang nagpe-payoff pala siya (ang efforts ko),” she added.

It was all worth it for Macandili, who already had some bruises and scratches from all the ‘buwis-buhay’ digs.

Coincidentally, Macandili was named MVP in the Philippine Super Liga All Filipino Conference exactly a year ago. She was the country’s first libero to become an MVP in a tournament.

Meanwhile, Japan’s Shinnabe Risa was the MVP of the tournament.

Korea ace Kim Yeon Koung was the first outside spiker, Thailand phenom Chatchu-on Moksri  was the second best outside spiker, Hattaya Bamrungsuk was the first best middle blocker, Iwasaka Nana of Japan was the second best middle blocker, Jin Ye of China was the best opposite spiker, seasoned playmaker Nootsara Tomkom of Thailand was the best setter and Kobata Mako of Japan was the first best libero.
