UNIVERSITY of the Philippines gained a share of fourth spot by downing University of Santo Tomas, 25-19, 25-18, 16-25, 32-30, on Sunday in the UAAP Season 78 women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Maroons bounced back from a five-set loss to third-running Far Eastern University (4-3) and now hold a share of fourth spot with National University at 3-3.
Ateneo leads with a 6-1 mark followed by La Salle with a 5-1 record.
Rookie Diana Carlos led the way for UP with 15 points, while veterans Nicole Tiamzon and Kathy Bersola had 14 and 11 markers, respectively.
Chloe Cortez committed a service error that pushed UP at match point before Marian Buitre blocked Cherry Rondina’s attack to end the match.
But UP coach Gerry Yee is far from satisfied.
“Mga bata pa, makukulit,” said the veteran mentor.
“Kasi ise-set na lang natin, like we normally do, i-o-over natin. Papaluin na lang ng big man mo ida-drop ball pa. Kinakabahan sila obviously,” he explained.
“Tinatanong ko sila kung kinakabahan sila, sasagot ng hindi po, hindi po. Tapos ganon ang laro? So wala, more practice pa,” he added.
Still, Yee is glad his players got a boost ahead of their match against National University on Wednesday.
“Malayo pa kami we have to practice more nandyan nakikita natin masarap sila panoorin pero malayo pa,” he said.
UST avoided getting swept and looked set to force a fifth set when Mela Tunay delivered four consecutive service aces for an 11-8 lead, but the Tigresses’ errors allowed UP to tie it at 11.
“I told the girls na, ‘wag kayong pakakampante’. Kasi ‘di ba usual na game nila (UST) first two sets wala sila but third, fourth and fifth kinukuha nila. They (Lady Maroons) have to watch out.”
Rondina and EJ Laure each scored 20 points for UST, which dropped to 2-4.
