PHILIPPINE Army shook off a sluggish first set and regrouped in time to beat Far Eastern University, 18-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-17, on Tuesday in the Shakey’s V League Open Conference at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
After losing the first set, the defending champions made the necessary adjustments to win the next three and catch Sandugo-San Sebastian at the top of the leaderboard on 2-0 (win-loss) records.
“We were not playing our game in the first set, we didn’t play as a team that’s why they beat us there,” said coach Rido de Guzman. “But we changed our game (in the second set) and we worked as a team.”
The Lady Troopers were unstoppable in the third set as they held the Morayta-based squad to four points against their nine in one fiery stretch to open a 14-6 advantage.
They carried that momentum into the fourth set where they built an 11-5 lead and never looked back.
Rachel Anne Daquis, the Open Conference Finals MVP last season, once again led the Lady Troopers with 14 points. Michelle Carolino, Joanne Bunag, Iari Yongco and Cristina Salak contributed 12, 11, 11 and 10, respectively.
Iris Patrona and Angeline Tabaquero had a combined 29 points for the Lady Tamaraws, 0-2.
