DEFENDING champion Arellano University booked a trip back to the finals of the NCAA Season 93 women’s volleyball tournament, ripping Jose Rizal University, 25-13, 25-20, 25-17, in the Final Four on Friday at The Arena in San Juan.
Regine Arocha had 15 points, 15 digs and five excellent receptions for AU, which arranged a best-of-three title series with San Beda starting on February 16.
“Syempre mas lalo namin kailangan mag pursige kasi ang Beda kahit papano gustong manalo niyan eh so kami naman kailangan namin mag pursige para maidefend ang title,” said AU coach Obet Javier.
Arellano setter Sarah Verutiao registered 39 of the team’s 43 excellent sets that were converted to 38 kill points.
Andrea Marzan also had nine markers for AU, while Necole Euben added eight, while skipper Mary Ann Esguerra and Jovielyn Prado chipped in seven apiece.
Javier reminded his team to double their efforts when they face San Beda.
“Sa huddle mamaya ire-remind ko lang sa mga players ko na ibigay na natin ang dapat nating ibigay pagdating sa finals kasi ito na yun eh,” he said.
“Dumaan na tayo sa mahirap na mahirap na sitwasyon ’wag na natin bigyan ng pagkakataon na maisahan tayo ng kalaban,” he added.
Dolly Verzosa scored 12 for JRU, while skipper Shola Alvaraez, who averaged 21.3 points per game in the elimination round, only had seven in her last game in the NCAA.
It was a tough end to JRU's stint after making it to the semifinals for the first time since the school started its women’s volleyball program in 2008.
