DEFENDING champion La Salle has already secured a spot in the Final Four armed with a twice-to-beat advantage, but the Lady Spikers are gunning for more than payback in their rematch with archrival Ateneo Lady Eagles in the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament.
Both carrying an 11-2 win-loss card, La Salle and Ateneo face off on Saturday, 4 p.m. at the Araneta Coliseum with the top seed in the Final Four at stake.
Aside from the top spot and bragging rights, Lady Spikers skipper Kim Dy has a more personal reason for wanting to win the rematch after suffering a tough 24-26, 24-26, 25-21, 17-25 loss in the two rivals' first encounter this season last March 4.
“Syempre naman gusto namin mag No. 1, yun ang goal namin,” she said. “Advantage ‘yun pag No.1 ka and makukuha namin confidence if we win the game.”
“Ngayon, mas alam mo ‘yun, may pinaghuhugutan ka. So makikita mo ‘yung fire in your eyes, tipong ganun and papakita namin [para] manalo against them,” added Dy, who sat out the win over Adamson last Saturday to be fully healthy after coming off an ankle sprain.
Their loss to the Lady Eagles was a bitter pill to swallow for the Lady Spikers as they spent more than an hour inside the locker room at the MOA Arena for the post-game huddle.
No one - from head coach Ramil de Jesus down to the players - granted an interview as they went out of the dugout in a single line and headed straight to the team bus waiting outside the venue.
