LA SALLE Dasmarinas moved closer to a title sweep as the men’s and women’s volleyball teams won their title series openers in the 11th Universities and Colleges Athletic Association Wednesday at the Olivarez College gymnasium in Sucat, Paranaque.
The Patriots overcame a rough start to beat Olivarez College 22-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-22, while the Lady Patriots, with former teammate Jennifer Manzano calling the shots, whipped Philippine School of Business Administration 25-15, 25-21, 25-15.
La Salle Dasmarinas is eyeing its 10th men’s and 10th women’s volleyball crown.
Joel Villanueva scored eight straight points with his serves, allowing the Patriots to take a 13-5 lead in the second set.
Alvin Cacayurin, Abdul Alkasim and Hudri Kona led a Patriots surge in the third set, taking an early 9-2 lead for an easy set win.
Meanwhile, rookie Monique Tiangco lifted the Lady Patriots with her booming serves when the Lady Jaguars threatened at 7-8. The Lady Patriots went on to score 12 straight points.
The second matches will be played Friday at the Central Colleges of the Philippines gymnasium in Sta. Mesa, Manila.
