UNIVERSITY of Perpetual Help kept its semifinal hopes alive with a 25-22, 25-17, 25-15 victory over Mapua University on Monday in the NCAA Season 94 women’s volleyball tournament at the Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Altas, who need to sweep their remaining games to stay in the semis race, got a big boost with the win over the lowly Lady Cardinals.
Mapua last week won its first victory in two and a half seasons, ending a 23-match skid at the expense of Emilio Aguinaldo College.
Cindy Imbo showed the way for Perpetual Help with 12 points built on 11 attacks, while making 16 digs.
Hannah Suico delivered 11 hits, while Jowie Albert Versoza added eight markers as playmaker Necelle Gual dished out 26 excellent sets.
The Lady Altas gained a share of fourth place with idle San Sebastian College at 4-2.
Perpetual Help needs to beat semis-bound and unbeaten leader Arellano University (7-0) on Thursday, and also have to get past San Sebastian and Jose Rizal University next week to reach the semis.
Jan Morano had eight points for the Lady Cardinals, who ae tied with the idle Letran Lady Knights at 1-6.
In men’s play, the defending champions Altas stayed unbeaten in six matches, beating the Cardinals, 25-15, 25-12, 25-19, to keep the solo lead and secure at least a playoff spot for a semifinal spot.
Reigning Most Valuable Player and last year’s top rookie Joebert Almodiel fired 15 points and made seven excellent receptions, while Ronniel Rosales and Louie Ramirez added 11 hits each as Perpetual Help improved to 6-0.
Nobody scored in double figures for Mapua with Mark Jason Egan having the highest production of six points as the Cardinals reeled with a 2-5 slate.
