CIGNAL made the win column of the Philippine Super Liga Grand Prix Friday night by turning back Petron, 17-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25-18, at The Arena in San Juan.
Chinese import Li Zhangzhan was a dominant force for the HD Spikers with 22 points, while Lei Xie and Maureen Penetrante-Ouano added 12 each.
Cignal evened its record at 1-1 as it outplayed Petron by registering nine blocks against the five of the Blaze Spikers. The HD Spikers also had more service aces, 9-4.
The Blaze Spikers tried to extend the game to a deciding fifth set after rallying from a 10-23 deficit to inch closer at 18-24.
But Danika Gendrauli put an end to Petron’s fight back by scoring with a back row attack to end the match.
Communication barrier with their two Chinese imports hampered the HD Spikers stint in their debut game against PLDT.
"Noong first game kasi namin, hindi pa kami nakaka-adjust sa mga Chinese imports namin, nahihirapan kami makipag-communicate," said Cignal coach Sammy Acaylar.
"Pero sa tulong na rin ng interpreter kaya ngayon ok na and we won the game."
Team captain Stephanie Mercado led the Blaze Spikers with 12 points, while Japanese reinforcement Shinako Tanaka added 11.
Petron dropped to sixth place with a 0-2 record.
