CIGNAL rallied back from two sets down to turn back Sta. Elena, 23-25, 22-25, 25-16, 25-20, 15-9, to grab solo second spot in the Spikers' Turf Reinforced Conference at The Arena in San Juan on Saturday.
Lorenzo Capate, Jr. had 13 points for the HD Spikers, who book their second win in three matches following the comeback victory,
Philippine Air Force remains on top with a perfect 2-0 slate.
Edmar Bonono, Alexis Faytaren, and Edwars Ybañez each had 12 for Cignal in the match that took two hours and 13 minutes to finish.
Cignal assistant coach Sammy Acaylar, who called the shots for the team in the absence of Macky Carino, currently in the UniGames, admitted being used to playing in five-setter matches, but prefers ending games quickly.
“Of course gusto ko matapos kaagad pero one game at a time lang,” said Acaylar. “But the problem is, the team bonding kasi, I was surprised maganda kasi ang bonding ng team ko.”
“But instead na mainis ako hinabaan ko na lang ang pasensiya ko and I told them that it’s just a game so just enjoy.”
Acaylar found a ‘lucky pick’ in spiker-turned-libero Jay De La Cruz, who played the last two sets after Sandy Montero played the first three.
“Kapag kasi naging complacent ka makaka-five points ang kalaban then isang point ka lang so I told them after the third set magbabago tayo (ng strategy), Maipanalo natin ang third set magbabago sila psychologically kasi kakabahan ang kalaban,” he said.
“So ang attitude ko is I have to have a lucky player, magic bunot kumbaga ando so I changed my libero, Pagpalit ko ng libero gumaan na ang laro namin,” he added.
Nestor Molate led Sta. Elena (1-3) with 19 points, while Alnasip Laja added 17, Myco Antonio chipped in 13 and Ace mandani contributed 10.
Sta. Elena had a better attacking game by coming up with 63 points, while Cignal only had 50, but it was its 44 turnovers that spelled the difference.
