CIGNAL downed erstwhile unbeaten Cagayan, 25-18, 25-21, 25-22, on Sunday to move up to second place in the Philippine Super Liga at the PhilSports Arena.
Venus Bernal led the HD Spikers with 21 points, while Honey Tubino and Danika Gendrauli chipped in 13 and 11, respectively, to deny the Lady Rising Suns a fourth consecutive win.
"Ang ginawa lang namin sa game na ito ay more on fast plays kasi they are good in floor defense so we just adjusted," said Cignal coach Sammy Alaycar.
Cignal is now 2-2, while Cagayan Valley absorbed its first loss in the tournament in four games (3-1).
"Maybe off lang sila ngayon," said Alaycar of the Lady Rising Suns' performance.
"Ang sabi ko kasi sa kanila (players) sa every kalaban dapat may animal instinct," he added. "Kahit sino pa ang kalaban wala dapat distraction or intimidation."
Cignal pulled away from a tied 21-all contest in the second set as Bernal sparked a 4-0 spurt to lead two sets to nothing.
In the third set, Gendrauli fired a power hit followed by a service ace as the HD Spikers took the driver's seat, 23-21. Bernal positioned the HD Spikers at match point and took the match on a Sandra delos Santos miscue.
"Bumawi lang talaga ako kasi off ako last time," said Bernal, who had 12 markers in their 25-16, 13-25, 17-25, 21-25, loss to PCSO Bingo Milyonaryo on Friday.
Cignal held all of the Lady Rising Suns to just single digits, with Joy Cases and Sandra delos Santos scoring just eight points apiece.
