CIGNAL easily disposed of Petron in straight sets to arrange a Finals showdown with Philippine Army for the maiden Philippine Super Liga championship.
Venus Bernal and Danika Gendrauli starred in the 25-20, 25-20, 25-23, win as the HD Spikers took just 70 minutes to complete their semifinal win on Friday night at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The HD Spikers and Lady Troopers dispute the inaugural championship in a winner-take-all match on Sunday, also at the MOA Arena.
Bernal and Gendrauli had 15 points apiece, while Honey Tubino contributed 13 markers in what was virtually a walk in the park for the HD Spikers.
But Cignal coach Sammy Acaylar wasn’t surprise at all with the seeming ease his team beat Petron.
“Yes, I am confident na three sets lang,” said the veteran mentor after emerging from the team dugout. “Coming into the game I expected that we will beat them in straight sets.”
Down by seven, 16-23, in the third set, Cignal poured in nine consecutive points, capped by a Gendrauli service ace, to seal the victory.
Gendrauli had four points, including three service aces, while Bernal came away with back-to-back spikes for a combined six points in the closing 9-0 run.
Aiza Maizo and Angge Tabaquero finished with 12 and 10 points, respectively for Petron, which battles Cagayan Valley for third place also on Sunday.
