UNIVERSITY of Sto. Tomas prevailed over University of the East, 25-9, 25-22, 25-23, in a battle of winless teams on Wednesday in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
The Tigresses made it to the win column after starting the season with back-to-back losses.
Ria Meneses scored 13 points for UST, while EJ Laure and team captain Sisi Rondina had 12 markers each.
The Lady Warriors absorbed their third loss in as many matches.
UST moved ahead of UE and idle Adamson (0-3) and tied Far Eastern University at 1-2.
Idle National University in on top of the standings with three wins in three outings.
UE threatened to extend the match, taking a17-14 lead in the third and held on, 21-19, before Cherry Rondina led a 6-2 UST run to seal the win.
UST coach Kungfu Reyes was still unimpressed and said the team needs someone to step up as a leader, although he did not indicate the players he wanta to take charge.
Rondina was named captain before the tournament even as former Pam Lastimosa rejoined the Tigresses after missing a season due to an injury.
“Individually magaling tayo and pag pinagsama-sama ’yun nagiging problema, walang gustong mag take over sa leadership,” he said.
“‘Yun ang problem to solve, equal ang skills, bata o seasoned, pero sa leadership doon nagkakatalo. Walang gustong mag command galing sa loob,” he added.
Jasmine Alcayde and Mary Anne Mendrez each had six markers for UE.
