Celine Domingo eager to prove worth as PH U23 captain for Thailand stint
    Jun 28, 2019

SELDOM used by her new club, Celine Domingo is determined to prove her worth as captain of the Philippine Under-23 women’s team in its Thailand stint.

Domingo was acquired early this year by Creamline which already had solid middle blockers in Risa Sato and Pau Soriano, and with Venezuela’s Alescar Blanco joining them for the PVL Reinforced Conference, the FEU star has been getting limited minutes.

She suddenly has a bigger role to play, though, after being named skipper of the U23 squad seeing action in the Thailand Open Sealect Tuna Championships from July 4 to 10.

“Sobrang malaki ‘to para sa akin kasi first time ko ito e,” said Domingo, tapped skipper for the Thailand tournament as as U-23 national pool captain Isa Molde plays for her club Motolite in the PVL.

“Hindi ako masyadong ganoong nakakalaro sa Creamline, dito ko na lang ilalabas yung mga natutunan kay Coach Tai (Bundit) and yung mga matututunan ko kay coach Tina (Salak) and coach KungFu (Reyes),” said the Far Eastern University stalwart.

The 5-foot-10 Domingo is also glad the coaching staff isn’t setting a goal in terms of tournament placing as they play against some of the top clubs in the region.

“Hindi naman niya kami ipepressure na magkaroon ng target kasi puro mga bata kami halos lahat sa amin first time maglaro international,” said Domingo.

“Maglalaro lang kami ng maayos and ipakita namin kung ano yung kaya naming gawin. Pag nanalo kami bonus na lang yun.”

The former UAAP Best Blocker also said team chemistry won’t be a problem as she leads teammates Angel Canino, Ivana Agudo, Lyann De Guzman, Mafe Galanza, KC Galdones, Ysa Jimenez, Maji Mangulabnan, Rachelle Roldan, Imee Hernandez, Janna Torres, Roselyn Rosier, Jewel Encarnacion and Justine Jazareno.

“Noong past na naging captain ako, gusto ko yung walang hiyaan. Gusto ko yung captain lang nila ako pag nasa loob ng court, pero outside the court iisa lang kami, pantay pantay lang,” she added.

“Sabi nga ni coach Tina parang hindi mo aakalain na first training namin last Tuesday,” she said. “Kasi yung galaw namin, nagkaroon agad kami ng chemistry tsaka alam mo yun walang mahiyain sa amin lahat.”
