THE national women’s volleyball team will try do what it's men's basketball counterparts backed out of in the 2018 Jakarta Palembang Asian Games from August 18 to September 2 in Indonesia.

Newly elected Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc. president Peter Cayco stressed that even if Gilas Pilipinas has already withdrawn from the competition, the volleyball team will not back down.

“Kami lumaban, Gilas ayaw pumunta,” he said. “Ang sa akin naman, the girls earned the right to represent the country, ibigay natin ‘yun sa kanila.”

Cayco pointed out that it is both for the country’s pride and honor that the national volleyball federation will send a delegation after more than three decades of absence in the Asiad.

“Thirty-six years ago wala pang pinapanganak dyan (sa players), ‘yung mga coaches natin kakapanganak lang noong huli tayong pumunta sa Asian Games,” he said.

“I mean, we earned the right (to compete) gamitin natin and it’s there where we can hone our skills,” he added.

The top LVPI official also mentioned that even without the financial support from the Philippine Sports Commission, the national women’s volleyball team will still push through.

“Kahit anong mangyari hahanap at hahanap ako ng paraan mapondohan (ang national team). Katulong ko ‘to (Sir Ariel, LVPI secretary general),” he said.

The nationals are set to fly to Japan on Sunday morning for a two-week training camp in Okayama.
