CAGAYAN Valley edged PLDT Home Ultera, 25-20, 26-24, 12-25, 22-25, 15-10, on Tuesday for its third win as many matches in the Spikers’ Turf men’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
Rex Intal scored 17 points and Ateneo teammate Marck Espejo, the reigning UAAP MVP, added 15 for the Rising Suns.
Peter Torres also scored 15 and NU Bulldogs teammate Jan Paglinawan had 14 points.
Cagayan Valley wasted its solid start when it allowed PLDT to fight back and extend the match to five sets, but Rising Suns coach Nes Pamilar admitted they couldn’t win in three sets against the talented Ultra Fast Hitters.
The Rising Suns regained momentum in the fifth and took an early 8-3 lead, taking the win in two hours and two minutes.
“Hindi naman mananalo in three sets,” said Pamilar. “Kasi kung talent lang ang pag-uusapan patas lang,” said Pamilar.
“Nawalan kami ng receive at ng communication sa third at fourth sets.”
John Vic De Guzman scored 18 points, while Mark Gil Alfafara added 16, and Kheeno Franco chipped in with 11 for the Ultra Fast Hitters.
PLDT dropped to a share of second spot at 2-1 with Philippine Army, which demolished Fourbees-Cavite, 25-18, 25-17, 25-21.
Far Eastern University standout Greg Dolor scored 15 points for the Troopers, Patrick John Roxas added 13, Ariel Baloaloa had 11 and Benjaylo Labide contributed 10.
Juan David had 11 points for the Patriots, winless in three matches.
