OPENING-day winners Sandugo-San Sebastian and Cagayan Valley collide Tuesday in the battle of unbeaten teams of the Shakey’s V League Open Conference at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
Mike Rafael, coach of Cagayan, is wary of their powerhouse opponent and aware of his team’s weaknesses that need to be worked out.
“They’re a strong team. We have to work on our blocking for they’re a big team. We must also improve on our receiving for us to put up a good fight against them,” said Rafael.
The Lady Stags were simply overpowering against Ateneo in Sunday’s opener, making short work of the first conference champions in straight sets, 27-25, 25-19, 25-20.
Thai import Jeng Bualee and team captain Su Roces, who combined for 29 points, are again expected to lead San Sebastian in the 2 p.m. encounter among the early league leaders.
Cagayan also won its opening-day match against Far Eastern University, 25-20, 25-12, 25-21.
Ateneo and Philippine Navy, meanwhile, try to bounce back from their opening-day losses when they face each other at 4 p.m., before defending champion Philippine Army hopes to keep a share of the top spot when it battles FEU in the final offering of another triple header at 6 p.m.
A 25-14, 25-14, 25-13 winner over Philippine Navy, the Lady Troopers don’t want to be complacent against the Lady Tamaraws despite parading six former national team players led by Rachel Anne Daquis and Michelle Carolino.
“We’re still adjusting. It’s only two weeks since we’ve practiced. We have to work hard for the next game,” said Army coach Rico De Guzman.
