Bryan Bagunas set to become second Pinoy to play in Japan as import

    Jun 14, 2019

NATIONAL University star Bryan Bagunas will be the second Filipino spiker to play for Oita Miyoshi in the next season of Japan V.League but he shies away from comparisons to Marck Espejo.

After staying a couple of weeks training and trying out in Japan, Bagunas confirmed that his dream to play in international club scene will turn into reality in a few months as he is set to don the Weisse Adler jersey.

“Sobrang saya ko kasi isa ‘to sa pangarap ko na makapag laro sa international then eto na nga natupad kaya sobrang saya ko. Di ko ma explain e,” Bagunas said.

The reigning UAAP MVP, who steered NU to back-to-back championships, couldn’t avoid the comparison to his college rival and national teammate Espejo as he follows the footsteps of the ex-Ateneo star.

But the 6-foot-4 outside spiker is not pressuring himself on matching or surpassing how Espejo turned heads and leading Oita Miyoshi in scoring with just four wins in 27 games last season.

“Para sakin wala naman [pressure]. Basta ibibigay ko lang ‘yung pinaka-best ko,” Bagunas said. “Di ko naman intention na higitan or pantayan si Marck. Alam naman natin na maganda talaga napakita ni Marck nung last season po.”

The national team star is focused on showing his best and applying all the things he learned from NU.

“Basta ako ibibigay ko lang po ‘yung best ko sa ‘pag lalaro and ‘yung apply ko lang ‘yung mga natutunan ko po yung mga tinuro sa akin ng mga coaches ko ng college po,” he said.

Japan V.League kicks off late October, while Weisse Adler is expecting Bagunas to fly to Japan by September.

For now Bagunas will return to action for Air Force in the Spikers’ Turf Reinforced Conference and continue his training with the national team.

Bagunas also agreed with his club to return in the 30th Southeast Asian Games in November.
