Brazil edges USA in five sets to top FIVB World Women's Grand Prix

BANGKOK — Brazil dethroned USA, 18-25, 25-17, 25-23, 22-25, 15-9, on Sunday in the 2016 FIVB World Women’s Grand Prix at Huamark Indoor Stadium.

Fabiana Claudino led the way with 18 points as the Brazilians scored their 11th title.

Fernanda Rodrigues and Sheilla Castro de Paula Blassioli added 14 markers apiece, while Thaisa Menezes chipped in 12.

Brazil, third last year, registered its 18th medal finish, including three runners-up and four third place finishes. Head coach Jose Roberto Guimaraes has eight titles with the team under his belt.

De Paula Blassioli was named best outside spiker, while Menezes was awarded second best middle blocker.

Natalia Perreira won the Most Valuable Player award.

Foluke Akinradewo scored 19 for USA, while Kimberly Hill, who was named second best outside spiker, had 17 points with 14 kills.

Best middle blocker Rachel Adams delivered 15 points including three blocks.
