FAR Eastern University dealt University of the Philippines a 25-16, 25-16, 27-25 defeat on Wednesday, putting a sad end to a season that started with a lot of promise for the Lady Maroons.
The Lady Tamaraws relied on Bernadeth Pons and Toni Rose Basas to hold off a last-ditch UP stand in the third set and secure a place in the Final Four of the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament.
Pons and Basas made 12 points apiece for FEU while Heather Guino-o added 11 and graduating skipper Remy Palma had 10.
FEU doubled the efforts of UP in blocking (6-3) and had thrice as much service aces (12-4).
At 8-6 (win-loss), FEU is in fourth place half a game behind University of Santo Tomas (8-5) but a half-game ahead of National University (7-6) going to the final weekend of the eliminations.
UST and NU square off in their final game in the eliminations and the two teams can end up tied with FEU at 8-6 (win-loss) in the event of a victory by the Lady Bulldogs.
However, FEU is guaranteed a place in the semis under such a scenario due to a superior quotient.
UP bravely saved four match points but back-to-back errors by Nicole Tiamzon left the Lady Maroons (7-7) out of the Final Four picture in Tiamzon, Kathy Bersola and Princess Gaiser's final season with the team.
Diana Carlos finished with 13 markers for UP, while Tiamzon and Bersola had eight and seven points, respectively, on their last game in the UAAP.
