SKIPPER Bernadeth Pons was glad to Far Eastern University make a strong start for a change and hold on for the win to stop the bleeding.
The Lady Tamaraws overcame the Lady Maroons in a battle of skidding teams, FEU ending a two-match slide and University of the Philippines absorbing a third straight loss in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament.
FEU was coming off three consecutive five-set matches and the relatively quick match, one hour and 17 minutes, was a big boost for the squad.
“Sabi ko i-push natin na umpisahan ang first set, susunod na lang ang ibang sets,” said Pons.
“First set pa lang sabi ko start tayo strong and sabi ko tapusin natin ng strong.”
FEU actually had to fight back from a four-point deficit to take the first set, the first time this season the Lady Tamaraws were able to take the opening frame.
“Sobrang laking bagay kasi syempre two points na lang matatapos na nila ang first set so sabi namin na hindi naman natatapos ang game sa 23 lang so tuluy-tuloy lang kami,” said Pons.
“Effort pa rin lahat, walang titigil hanggang sa natapos namin ang 25 points,” she added.
The Lady Tamaraws eye back-to-back wins as they face winless University of the East next week, but Pons has warned her teammates about complacency.
“Hindi pwedeng magrelax kami doon sa UE kasi although wala pa silang panalo eh nag-eensayo din ‘yun tapos lumalaban din sila so kailangan paghirapan namin every point,” she said.
