BERNADETH Pons won't end her UAAP volleyball career without a victory over Ateneo, after all.

This after Pons and the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws snapped a losing skid against the Lady Eagles that lasted five long years with a thrilling 19-25, 25-21, 18-25, 25-20, 15-9 win on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Pons joined forces with Chinchin Basas when the Lady Tams climbed back from two points down in the fifth set to claim the victory. The two fired 14 points each, with Pons putting FEU at match point before Kat Tolentino's hit went long.

The graduating spiker is understandably elated over his first win against Ateneo since his league debut five years ago.

"Sobrang happy," she said. "Napag-usapan din namin noong last set na in my four years sa UAAP, never pa kaming nanalo ng first game sa UAAP, ito pa lang ang first time sa pang fifth year ko na."

"So napag-usapan namin na hopefully mangyari siya ngayon, ayun nangyari naman."

FEU coach George Pascua said the rousing victory should work wonders for the confidence of the team, which is tagged as the pre-season favorite to win it all owing to an intact lineup.

"Sa amin ano ‘to, pampa-high morale sa mga players kasi knowing Ateneo ang tinalo namin," said Pascua, who replaced Shaq delos Santos prior to the start of the season.

Still, Pascua warned the Lady Tams have their work cut out for them this season.

"Madami pa, madami pa. Nag-uumpisa pa lang kami so knwoing ang first round kasi kapaan pa lang ‘yan, scouting, marami pa kaming i-improve lalo na ‘yung blocking namin," said Pascua.

Still, a win is a win for Pons.

"A win is a win pa rin although madami pa rin kaming errors and lapses. Pero good thing naman is naka-recover kami," Pons said.
