BACOLOD Tay Tung High School took down erstwhile-unbeaten Holy Rosary College, 25-13, 25-19, on Wednesday to secure semifinal berth in the Rebisco Volleyball League National Championship Girls 18 and Under at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
Joan Marie Monares nailed seven points off four service aces and three spikes to help the Bacolod spikers book their first semifinals appearance in RVL, surpassing their fifth-place finish in last year’s tournament.
“Nagclick lang yung aming depensa at communication sa loob ng court,” said Bacolod Tay Tung head coach Ian Macariola.
Bacolod Tay Tung improved to 4-0 and looks to sweep its group when it plays New Zealand’s Z-Air Maori on Thursday at 2 p.m.
The Bacolod-based spikers will either face Pool A’s unbeaten Aloha Region Juniors or Kings’ Montessori in a knockout match on Friday morning.
The Hawaiians earned their fourth straight win, sweeping University of Mindanao-Tagum College (1-3), 25-11, 25-10, and will face Kings’ Montessori for the top seed also on Thursday at 3 p.m.
It was Holy Rosary College’s first defeat in Pool B falling to a 3-1 slate and will have to win its final elimination game against Leyte National High School (2-2), which is still in the semis hunt after surviving also-ran St. Alexius College (1-4), 19-25, 25-22, 25-18.

New Zealand’s Z-Air Maori (1-3) earned its first win as it shattered the semis hopes of Malaysia’s Sarawak U-18 (2-3), 25-22, 19-25. In the last match of the day, University of San Jose Recoletos (1-3) made the win column in Pool A, beating Holy Family Academy (1-3), 25-13, 25-19.
