BINAN City, Laguna — Powerhouse teams Thailand and Korea disposed of separate foes to start their campaign in the 19th AVC Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championships on Wednesday at Alonte Sports Arena.
Thailand needed only 59 minutes to put away Maldives, 25-5, 25-12, 25-9, behind the heroics of Hattaya Bamrungsuk and Wipawee Srithong, who finished with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Rashidha Hawwa was the lone bright spot for Maldives with 10 points, from seven hits and three service aces.
South Korea bested New Zealand, 25-21, 25-14, 25-12, in the opening game as Park Jeongah finished with 16 points and Hwang Minkyoung added 12.
The Koreans had an impressive game with a total of 39 attack points, five blocks and nine service aces, while committing only 13 errors in a match that took an hour and 16 minutes to finish.
Francesca Edmondson made 10 markers for New Zealand.
