EVEN before the match ended, Arellano University spiker Regine Arocha already crowned the Lady Chiefs as back-to-back champions.
Coming from a thrilling five-setter victory in Game One, AU breezed past San Beda University, 25-13, 29-27, 25-15, in Game Two on Monday to finish off the series and win its second straight title in the NCAA Season 93 women’s volleyball tournament on Monday at The Arena in San Juan.
Arocha, who was named Finals MVP, in fact was already smiling from ear to ear at the start of the third set when they stormed ahead, 8-0.
The Lady Red Spikers’ body language in the third set clearly made Arocha felt that the game was over.
“Parang binigay na po nila sa amin, umayaw na po sila,” she said. “Opo, sobrang, parang noong first five points pa lang, nararamdaman na po namin na sa amin na po (ang championship)”.
AU was already at championship point, 24-10, when SBU scored five consecutive points but Lady Chiefs coach Obet Javier did not even bother calling a timeout to stop the momentum.
The veteran coach was confident on his wards, especially Arocha, that there won’t be a Game Three and that Sunday’s practice was the last for the season.
“Kasi gustong-gusto ko, gustong-gusto naming mag-champion talaga kaya namin nagawa,” said Arocha.
“Kahapon po kinlaim na namin na last training namin ‘yun, last game namin ngayon. Kaya pinagtrabahuhan namin,” she said.
AU won its third title in four years.
