Individual title vs championship trophy. It has been discussed extensively in the sporting world.
For star spiker Alyssa Valdez, there’s no argument — and she says a team title trumps even three individual awards.
The 20-year-old Ateneo junior claimed a golden treble with the UAAP Season 76 women’s volleyball with the MVP, Best Scorer and Best Server awards, but she believes that what would really stamp her mark in the league is a championship for the Lady Eagles.
“Fight ng team ang nasa isip ko hindi naman ’yung individual (awards),” said Valdez.
“Ang maaalala naman ng tao ’yung champion.”
Valdez is looking to propel Ateneo to its first-ever title in the UAAP and the Lady Eagles have proven that they have what it takes after turning back three-time defending champion La Salle with victory in the opening match of the finals.
However, they need to win twice more to lift the crown, while La Salle is just a match win away from its fourth straight title.
The match is set at 4 p.m. at the MOA Arena.
Valdez believes they can force a series decider, having shown they can survive a do-or-die match by overcoming a tough challenge from Adamson and hurdling twice-to-beat second seed National University in the semifinals.
“Since Adamson do-or-die na kami sana madala namin 'yung experience namin na 'yun," she said. “Hopefully makapaglaro kami with heart strong, all out talaga kasi nothing to lose kami and more to gain.”
