ATENEO got back on track after a 26-24, 25-21, 17-25, 25-19 win over National University in the UAAP men's volleyball tournament on Wednesday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
Mark Espejo exploded for 23 points for the Blue Eagles, who bounced back from an opening day loss to Far Eastern University that snapped their 30-game winning streak in the UAAP.
Gian Glorioso added 11 points, while Chumason Njigha and Ron Medalla had eight markers each.
"We just came from a terrible loss. Well it just shows na everything should come from the ground. Hindi pwedeng you assume what to expect," said Ateneo coach Oliver Almadro.
"Importante, if you want to expect something, you have to work for it. My players delivered well, they owned the team, they owned this game. So, I commend my players because they really worked for this."
Bryan Bagunas had 18 points on 16 spikes, a block, and an ace for the Bulldogs, who fell to a 1-1 card.
James Natividad added 17 points.
Meanwhile, University of Santo Tomas defeated University of the East, 25-11, 25-21, 20-25, 25-15, earlier on Wednesday at the same venue.
Amald Bautista fired 13 points for the Tigers, who racked up their second straight victory.
Joshua Umandal and Juren Buro added 12 points each in the match that lasted for an hour and 35 minutes.
The Tigers looked on their way to sweeping their foes but the Red Warriors came alive in the third set to extend the match.
It didn't take long before the Tigers regained theei bearings and made quick work of UE in the following frame.
Geric Ortega had 12 markers on 11 spikes for the Red Warriors, who remained winless in two matches.
