TAI Bundit will stay put as head coach of Ateneo Lady Eagles even as the team moves to resolve 'internal problems,' Ateneo president Fr. Jett Villarin said on Monday.
After a meeting on Monday with Bundit, team officials and representatives from the athletics office, Fr. Villarin announced through his Facebook account the four-year Thai mentor will still call the shots for the Lady Eagles in the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball tournament.
"There has been talks about the Ateneo women’s volleyball team and the status of coach Tai. I would like to inform everyone that coach Tai is still with the team," Fr. Villarin posted.
"In fact, I just had a meeting with coach Tai and our athletics people this morning. And I will soon be meeting with our players," he added.
The Ateneo official also stressed that although there are internal problems within the team, they are trying to resolve the issue.
"I must acknowledge though that there are issues within the team, as in all teams, and these will require some time to resolve," said Villarin.
"On behalf of the Ateneo de Manila, I appeal for your patience and understanding as we try to resolve these internal issues. I also appeal your better sense to refrain from any speculation or spreading of falsehood that may besmirch the reputation of our fine players, our good coach and our school," he added.
Lady Eagles team manager Tony Boy Liao confirmed on Sunday that some of the players had complained about Bundit's rigorous training and the lack of playing time they get from the Thai coach.
According to Liao, Bundit was asked by Ateneo athletic director Em Fernandez not to perform his duties as the head coach of the team anymore.
Bundit steered the Lady Eagles to four straight Finals appearances, including back-to-back championahips in Seasons 76 and 77.
Villarin said he will "issue a formal statement to inform everyone of the outcome of our efforts to resolve this as soon as possible."
