ATENEO faces the issue of rest and rust as the Lady Eagles’ break between matches could stretch to as long as 23 days.
In an official schedule released by the league on Monday, the opener of the the UAAP women’s volleyball finals series will be played on, at the latest, March 14 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The Lady Eagles claimed an outright finals berth after a 14-match sweep of the elimination round, sending the tournament into a stepladder playoffs featuring second seed La Salle, third seed National University, and the fourth seed which could either be University of Santo Tomas or Far Eastern University.
That’s 19 more days from now and a total of 23 days since the Lady Eagles clinched an outright finals spot when they beat La Salle in four sets on February 18 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The Lady Eagles will also have a thrice-to-beat advantage in the finals, while needing two wins to claim their second straight title.
Ateneo will now be the ones to wait. The Lady Eagles overcame La Salle’s thrice-to-beat advantage in the finals to win the Season 76 crown.
This time, though, partly due to the No. 4 spot in the stepladder still to be decided between UST and FEU on Wednesday, Ateneo’s wait is five days longer than the 18 the Lady Spikers were inactive before the finals.
