ATENEO is taking its already intense training under coach Tai Bundit up a notch as the Lady Eagles brace for twice-a-day practice sessions in their bid to reclaim the title in the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament.
Facing bitter rival La Salle in the finals for the sixth straight year, the Lady Eagles aim to show up in the best possible form through two-hour sessions in the morning and afternoon.
The Lady Spikers have won three of the five previous finals face-offs.
“Mas mahirap siguro (ang training) kasi mas strikto si coach Tai ngayon eh, syempre Finals,” said Ateneo assistant coach Sherwin Meneses.
In the morning workouts, the players would do five rounds at the oval with five-minute time limits followed by weights training.
They undergo drills, practice sets and sometimes play tune-up matches in the afternoon.
The UAAP best-of-three Finals was moved from April 29 to May 2 due to the Asean summit, which prolonged the preparation of both teams for the championship showdown.
Ateneo, though, has no complaints as the Lady Eagles are already used to the Spartan-like training under Bundit.
“Well, everyday naman talaga mahirap ang training so ‘di ko alam kung kelan ‘yung mas mahirap pa,” said fourth-year Ateneo hitter Michelle Morente.
“We’re still doing the same drills, (mahirap) pa rin siya ng bonggang bongga,” she added.
