HEART-strong Ateneo bowed to Thailand, 14-25, 17-25, 25-21, 25-20, for its second straight loss in the 17th Asean University Games in Palembang, Indonesia on Friday.
UAAP MVP Alyssa Valdez came away with 22 points for the Lady Eagles although the effort proved no match against the hard-hitting Thais, who were bannered by former Shakey's V-League imports and six members of the national team.
Michelle Morente also had nine markers, Ella de Jesus chipped in six, Jia Morado, and rookies Bea de Leon and Jhoana Maraguinot had five points apiece for the reigning UAAP champions.
"The Thais have six national team players. They're a very strong team, very experienced, and very organized and fast in their plays," said Ateneo team manager Tony Boy Liao in an interview with Spin.ph.
"Our team had a great experience playing with the Thais. The Lady Eagles played all out and hard and they tried to match up with the Thais," he added.
"It's very good that we we're able to win a set. All the other teams they (Thais) played were 3-0. I'm very proud of the team," Liao continued.
The Lady Eagles still have a chance for the bronze medal should they win their match against Singapore on Saturday.
Former Cagayan Valley imports Kanika Thipachot and Wanida Kotruang finished with 18 and 10 points, respectively, for Thailand.
