ATENEO star Bea de Leon braces for another ‘classic’ match against bitter rival La Salle in the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball tournament on Saturday at the MOA Arena.
Game time is at 4:00 p.m.
Ateneo and La Salle are currently tied with Far Eastern University at the No. 2 spot, behind National University (5-1).
“Given with all the results of the game, I think it’s gonna be one of the most exciting games,” said de Leon.
The fourth-year middle blocker stressed that the season’s unpredictable results make this anticipated clash more exciting.
Momentum is on the side of the Lady Eagles, who are riding on a four-game winning run despite starting the season with back-to-back losses.
The treble-seeking Lady Spikers, on the other hand, are on a shaky ride after losing two of their last three games.
Still, de Leon is not taking La Salle lightly, she knows that the Lady Spikers know how to bounce back strong after a tough loss.
“It’s really like anyone’s game, Ateneo-La Salle,” she said. “I think it’s gonna be a classic.”
On the other hand, La Salle coach Ramil de Jesus is hoping that they can resolve whatever problems they have before they face Ateneo on Saturday.
The veteran mentor was obviously disappointed after they lost to Adamson a week ago.
“Siguro (kailangan i-address) ‘yung problema muna sa team kung meron man, problema sa inside sa team. Skills kasi andyan na ‘yan eh,” he said.
De Jesus pointed out that they should start rebuilding their confidence, especially that of his setter Michelle Cobb, who will be the leader on the court.
“Siguro ‘yung kumpyansa ng setter kung paano babalik para mas maging worth it siya sa loob ng court and then makapgbigay ng confidence sa mga kasama,” he said.
In their previous game, Cobb only had 29 excellent sets compared to her Adamson counterpart Fenela Emnas with 49.
The 10-time UAAP champion coach wants his sophomore playmaker to be more matured to be able to handle the pressure during games.
“Well itong mga klaseng big game dapat ma-experience ng setter namin so kung ma-overcome niya ‘tong ganitong pressure na nakapatong sa baikat niya good para sa kanya and good para sa team,” said de Jesus.
