ATENEO shut the door on University of Santo Tomas’ Final Four hopes with a 25-18, 25-21, 25-23 victory on Wednesday in the UAAP Season 76 women’s volleyball competitions at The Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Eagles improved their win-loss record to 9-4 heading into their final game against Far Eastern University on Sunday, while eliminating the Tigresses.
Former UST high school star Alyssa Valdez had 17 points, including the match-clinching block on Pam Lastimosa, to thwart the Tigresses’ late threat in the third set.
“Kailangan pa rin namin ng consistency and teamwork dahil patapos na (ang eliminations),” said Valdez. “Kailangan pa mag-level up ’yung game namin. Hopefully, ma-achieve namin ’yun.”
The Tigresses, once a powerhouse in the UAAP volleyball meet, dipped to 4-9 and will miss the semifinals for the second straight season.
Fighting for its playoff lives, UST looked set on preventing a sweep as it took a 23-22 lead in the third set on Alexine Cabanos’ service ace. But Valdez’s kill and Mae Tajima’s tap in front of the net sent the game into match point.
“Hindi maiiwasan siguro na mag-relax. Fortunately, nakuha pa rin namin ’yung game,” said Valdez of the third-set wobble.
Michelle Morente also had 14 points for the Lady Eagles.
